The power of the purse can be a great tool in creating demand for slavery-free products.
Did you know that there is power in your purse? Where and what you choose to buy has a huge influence on issues of poverty and slavery.
It is up to us to send a message to retailers that we want the chocolate, hoodies, coffee, shoes, bananas and lots of other things to be produced fairly. Exploitation can happen in many contexts – both hidden, and visible – and we need to be strong in asking our favourite shops to make sure they aren’t a part of it.
You can find out more about exploitation in the clothing industry here (link to make fashion traffik free campaign page).
And here’s some more about the link between human trafficking and the chocolate bar you’re about to eat from our friends at STOP THE TRAFFIK.
What can you do?
Research. Find out if your favourite brands offer traffik-free options. In the UK, look for Fairtrade, Rainforet Alliance and UTZ Certified labels. If you see them, say thanks! If not…
Talk to retailers. Tell them that you like their products, but don’t want to play a part in exploitation. Ask them to change.
Tell your friends. Imagine the impact we could have if we all started to look for certification labels on our shopping lists. Spread the word!
